NEWS from May 2013  (updated: 06.05.2013, 18:35)  Previous month's news

  • Our May meeting will be Tuesday, the 14th

at Stella Maris House in Rockland. The agenda is here. Note that the emailed agenda contained an error: Mike will not be speaking on election procedures; that was last month.
  • Clean Elections Hearings, Monday May 6, 10:00 a.m.

Five election-related bills are before the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee:
    LD 1271, 1299, 1309, 1422 and 1494.

The issues include increased transparency in reporting, enhanced funding for Clean Elections Act and a re-qualifying provision to allow matching funds that the courts will accept, a presidential primary for Maine and an instant runoff.

Any who wish to speak from written remarks may do so. Copies need to be given to the committee. Or people may just provide written statements. Having a roomful of interested citizens is always important.

  • Maine Legislature endorses Move-to-Amend

to overturn the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. BDN story (04/30)

The roll-call shows broad support across party lines. Jethro Pease (R- Morrill) was the only Knox Co legistlator voting no.

Now we need to strengthen our in-state clean elections program (see May 6 hearings).

  • The Maine Women's Lobby

is watching a number of bills in the legislature concerning women's health and reproductive rights.
  • Max Baucus retires from U.S. Senate!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Max.

Matt Miller in WaPo writes "A grateful nation cheers...Never has a politician done so much to lift the prospects of the republic simply by saying goodbye."

Montana Democrat Baucus helped pass the George Bush tax cuts, stymied health care reform and gun-control legislation. In the pocket of the insurance and firearms industries, Max will be 'well-cared for' in retirement.

  • No Searsport Propane Terminal

The developer withdrew their application after widespread public opposition. More at the BDN (04/02)
